Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic
The expert oral and maxillofacial surgeons at UCSF treat a range of conditions, both in our own surgery center and at UCSF Medical Center. “Maxillofacial” refers to the area of the face, jaw, mouth, and neck, and is often associated with surgical procedures that correct injuries, diseases, or deformities in this area.
At our surgery center, we use general anesthesia or other sedation to provide dental implants and perform surgery on people’s wisdom teeth. Our providers can perform bone grafting if patients do not have adequate bone for dental implants.
We also provide a hospital-based service that takes patients to the operating rooms at UCSF Medical Center for major surgeries including orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) and surgery for obstructive sleep apnea.
Services we offer
The UCSF Dental Center's Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic offers extractions, dental implants, advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery, and management of wisdom teeth and sleep apnea, including oral surgery when necessary.
-
Extractions
Sometimes, it is necessary or recommended to remove an entire tooth, including the crown and root, which may require oral surgery.
-
Implants
When patients lose some or all of their teeth, dental implants may be an option. Surgeons can implant dental prostheses that look natural and feel secure.
-
Orthognathic surgery
Patients with issues such as sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, facial appearance, or other orthodontic problems that cannot be easily treated with braces are sometimes candidates for corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery, which is designed to correct irregularities of the jaw and face to improve the way they work.
-
Sleep apnea treatment
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts, which can lead to other health problems. Potential solutions include CPAP machines, a mandibular advancement device (MAD) and, in serious cases, surgery.
-
Wisdom teeth management
Wisdom teeth—that third set of molars, typically coming to the surface in someone’s late teens or early 20s—often become impacted and need to be removed before they cause more serious problems.
