Periodontology Postgraduate Program
The UCSF Periodontology residency integrates the latest advances in biological science with modern diagnostic and treatment approaches for periodontal diseases. Residents receive comprehensive training in clinical periodontics and graduate-level oral and craniofacial sciences, with the option to pursue an MS or extend their training to complete a PhD. Graduates are fully qualified for examination by the American Board of Periodontology and prepared for careers in academia or clinical practice.

Program overview
The Periodontology residency is a full-time, 36-month program beginning July 1 each year. The didactic curriculum emphasizes the biological aspects of the pathogenesis and treatment of oral diseases, with advanced courses in microbiology, immunology, virology, oral pathology, oral medicine, molecular biology, connective tissue biochemistry, and biostatistics.
Residents spend over half of their time in clinical training, gaining hands-on experience in advanced surgical and nonsurgical techniques. Each resident has the option to conduct a faculty-mentored research project that culminates in a research thesis and a publication-ready manuscript.

- PGY 1: $71,760/year
- PGY 2: $74,128/year
- PGY 3: $76,574/year
How to apply
Applicants are accepted through the ADEA PASS system and must also register with the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program. Admission decisions are based on academic performance, NBDE/INBDE scores, letters of recommendation, research experience, and interviews.

To be eligible for admission to the Periodontology residency program, you must:
- Hold a DDS, DMD, or equivalent degree by the program start date
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Meet NBDE/INBDE requirements:
- Graduates: must pass and submit NBDE Parts 1 & 2 or INBDE by the application deadline
- Current dental students: may be considered for an interview without exam results, but must upload INBDE scores to PASS by November 1
- Matched applicants (NBDE track): must pass and submit NBDE Part 2 by program start
- Take the TOEFL if English is not your native language and you have not completed at least one year of higher education in the U.S. or Canada (English-speaking institution)
- Minimum accepted TOEFL iBT score: 90 (scores must be within two years of application cycle opening; MyBest Scores not accepted)

Submit your application through ADEA PASS by the deadline, including: personal essay, CV, official dental school transcript, scanned undergraduate transcripts, three PASS evaluation forms (one from a prosthodontist recommended), dean’s institution evaluation, and required scores.
Register with the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program and submit your Match code through ADEA PASS.
Pay the UCSF nonrefundable application fee through the UCSF application fee portal:
- $60 for domestic applicants
- $80 for international applicants
If you have international coursework: submit a course-by-course evaluation of all transcripts by ECE or WES. A WES ICAP report fulfills both evaluation and transcript requirements.

Applicants are evaluated on GPA, NBDE/INBDE scores, personal statement, recommendations, and research/clinical experience. UCSF does not use race, gender, or other protected categories in the selection process.

For the 2026–27 admissions cycle, interviews will be conducted in-person during October–November. Invitations will be sent directly by the program.
