University of California San Francisco
Oral and Craniofacial Sciences Programs
The Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (OCS) programs are offered by the UCSF Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Scholars, administered by the UCSF School of Dentistry, and delivered by faculty members from the UCSF schools of dentistry and medicine. The following programs are available:
- OCS PhD program
- OCS DDS/PhD program
The DDS/PhD program aims to train future academic scientists with a solid understanding of clinical dentistry and oral health. Students receive intensive training in biomedical sciences and comprehensive dental education, allowing them to identify clinically relevant questions and pursue independent, high-quality research in oral and craniofacial science. This integrated training supports careers dedicated to advancing knowledge in cell, developmental, and molecular biology; biochemistry; biomaterials; biophysics; and the physical sciences, all of which are directly related to oral and craniofacial health and disease.
Research training and academic preparation
Students in the OCS DDS/PhD program gain more than advanced research and clinical training—they become part of a scholarly community dedicated to advancing oral health and academic dentistry. Key features of the program include:
- Intensive research training tailored to dental professionals pursuing careers in biomedical and translational research
- Interdisciplinary education covering oral and craniofacial biology, molecular and cellular sciences, bioinformatics, biomaterials, and biophysics
- Close mentorship from faculty who are leaders in oral and biomedical research
- Preparation for careers as independent investigators, scientific leaders, and innovators in global oral health
How to apply
Admission to the DDS/PhD in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences is handled through the UCSF School of Dentistry.
Due to our program's funding sources, we are currently accepting applications only from individuals with U.S. citizenship or a green card. UCSF does not use race, gender, sex, or other protected categories, or proxies for protected categories, in the selection process.
