Orofacial pain refers to discomfort in the mouth, jaws, and face, and can significantly affect daily life. If you’re experiencing ongoing pain in these areas, consulting a dental professional with specialized training can make a meaningful difference.
This field focuses on diagnosing and treating disorders involving the jaw joints and muscles, nerve and vascular pain, headaches, sleep-related issues, and other complex conditions. Symptoms may include persistent or unusual pain, tinnitus, dizziness, muscle incoordination, or tingling sensations in the head and neck. Specialists also evaluate unresolved or unexplained tooth pain that continues after procedures such as root canals, extractions, or implants.

Payment and insurance options
At the UCSF Center for Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine, your health and well-being are our top priorities. Because insurance companies often base treatment decisions on cost rather than the best outcomes for patients, we have chosen not to work directly with medical or dental insurance providers.
Orofacial Pain Patients will be charged the exam fee at the time of your visit. We can provide you with a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you would like to check your coverage in advance, we can provide the necessary billing codes. Many of our services are also eligible for HSA expense reimbursement.
