Endodontics (root canals)
When the pulp that sits inside the cavity in the root of a tooth becomes diseased or injured, it needs treatment and sometimes removal—and that’s where endodontics steps in.
In many cases, that pulp is inflamed or infected. This situation can arise from deep cavities, cracks, or trauma to the tooth. If left untreated, the infection can spread, leading to severe pain and potential tooth loss. In most cases, if the endodontist can perform a root canal in time, the tooth can be saved.
The endodontist works on the inside of the tooth and, once finished, typically turns the work over to a prosthodontist, who works on the outside of the tooth—building a crown or other protective covering as part of a restorative dentistry practice.
